The Bret Net
Mini-Panther Report
1999-2000 Season Archive

October 2, 1999 (in Florida)
Panthers
4 Washington Capitals 3

The Panthers won their first game of the season, and also managed to score against the Capitals, which did not happen the last two times they played them at NCRC.

Bure was a notable presence in the game, which was his first of the season since he did not play in the pre-season. But the player that had to have been the number one star was Ray Whitney! He had 2 goals, and an assist. Bure only had one goal.  The other Panther to score a goal was Kozlov. Hedican did not get off to a great start as he ended up -1. Although from the highlights it was not really his fault! (Of course as usual I'm biased).

October 6, 1999 (in Florida)
Panthers
4 Los Angeles Kings 2

Hedican made the shot from the point to score the winning goal for the Panthers! But it deflected off of Mark Parrish so he was credited with the goal.  And I have to remember I live in an apartment .. or my neighbors are going to start wondering as I screamed when I thought he scored =) Bure scored the insurance goal on the empty net to give the Panthers a 4-2 victory. The last 3 goals were scored in a span of 1 min and 17 seconds at the end of the 3rd period. This is the fastest 3 goals in Panthers history. It was also the Panthers 100th home win.

It was an excellent night for Bret, with the assist on the winning goal, and an effort shortly before that could have evened it up but it went high and wide. I'm happy I stuck around and listened to this game.. was close to turning it off and going to watch TV, but I got distracted and left it on.

Bret made an effort at the end to try and even it up.. but it went high and wide.  In the end this didn't matter since he came back shortly thereafter to make the shot for  the winning goal.

Bure and Whitney make an excellent combination, even if they do make for a small line (both are 5'10"). They came together to tie the game with LA with only 1:51 left in the 3rd. They got the assists, Kozlov got the goal. Whitney was playing the second line, but was moved up to the first for the last few minutes.

The goals for the Panthers were scored by Svhela (Niedermayer, Dvorak), Kozlov (Whitney, Bure), Parrish ( Hedican, Mellanby), and Bure (Svhela, Spacek) EN.

October 9, 1999 (in Florida)
Panthers 2 Detroit Red Wing 2

I heard Hedican's name a lot.. so even with the missed practices this week he is getting a lot of playing time. The Panthers did go down 2-0 in the first period with goals from Shanahan and Federov, but the Panthers came back to tie it up with 2 goals in the 2nd period from Johnson (Kozlov, Laus) and Whitney (Niedermayer, Bure). The Panthers would have went ahead 3-2 in the third if it was not for the fact that Wells got a penalty behind the play at the same time as Simpson scored a goal.. so the goal was disallowed, and the Panthers and Red Wings went into OT with no other goals scored in the third period.

In OT Murray went against what he said he would do in OT. He went with 2 forwards, 2 d-men, as opposed to 3 forwards and 1 d-man. The 4 to start OT were Niedermayer, Whitney, Pitlick, and Hedican. The 2nd line was Bure, Kozlov, Spacek, and Svhela. There were lots of chances for both teams to score in the OT but no one made it in. So the game ended with each team getting a point in a 2-2 tie.

October 12, 1999 (in Montreal)
Panthers
2 Montreal Canadiens  2

Well it didn't take long for the Panthers to lose Bure.. he went out with what is suspected to be a groin injury in the third period of the game vs. Montreal.

But before he left he gave the Panthers some points, and got his 500th NHL Point. Bure had an unassisted goal in the first, and assisted on Lance Pitlick's goal in the second along with Ryan Johnson.

Mellanby has also been injured.. by the sounds of it very bad. He went head first into the boards. This seems to be a trend lately.. a very bad trend! He went out on a stretcher. It happened at the end of the game.

Hedican was once again in the action a lot even though he missed a few practices in the last week. He had some shots on goal that went wide.. he really needs to work on where that net is.. it hasn't moved in years.. =).

October 13, 1999 (in Toronto)
Panthers 2 Toronto Maple Leafs  3

Shorthanded the Panthers put up a good effort with the help of a rookie in his first NHL Game. Ivan Novoseltsev scored two goals.. not bad for a players first game! He just arrived from the Panthers farm team to make up for the loss of Scott Mellanby (mild concussion) and Pavel Bure (strained groin)

Not good when your listening to the game and you hear Hedican went hard off the boards.. the play by play is better this year than last.. I still wish I was watching the game though.. if only I had been able to talk my mom into getting a Satellite =) ...They got a hot tub instead.. lol

The Panthers went down 3-2 with Toronto getting a goal with 5 minutes left in the third. The Panther assists on Novoseltsev's goals went to Kvasha, Kozlov (2), and Kuba.

Next game is Saturday at home vs. Anaheim.

October 16, 1999 (in Florida)
Panthers 3 Anaheim Mighty Ducks  2

The Panthers came thru with there second try at Overtime with a goal 86 Seconds into the 5 min OT.

The Panther goals were scored by Parrish (Whitney, Niedermayer), Svhela -PP (Whitney, Parrish),   and Spacek (Svhela, Niedermayer). Due to audio troubles I didn't get to listen to the game. So those are the hi-lites.

As for Hedican points.. well he got 2 min for High Sticking.. so that equals 1 FT pt.. lol.

October 20, 1999 (in Florida)
Panthers 5 Vancouver Canucks 2

Well the Panthers won the game.. and normally I'd be happy about this.. except when they are playing my favorite team.. the Canucks! Would have been happier if Heddy had got a goal, an assist.. something!

Instead the Panthers went up 3-0 before the Canucks scored their first goal. The Panther goals were scored by Svhela, Kvasha, Niedermayer, Stewart and finally Kozlov on the empty net.

This had to have been revenge for last season when the Canucks shutout the Panthers 5-0. They meet again in 2 weeks in Vancouver, and it could possibly be a lot more interesting as Pavel Bure did not play tonight, and he should play then. It will also be a homecoming for Hedican who was in Vancouver for 5 years.

Forgot to make back up of Reports ..
October 22, 1999 (in Florida) Panthers

October 24, 1999 (in Philly) Panthers 0 Philadelphia Fylers 2 (Hedican out with groin injury)

October 29, 1999 (in Buffalo)
Panthers
2 Buffalo Sabres 3

Bret was back in the lineup for Florida tonight against Buffalo. Bret scored in the third period, his first of the season, on his only shot of the game, rocketing a slapshot past struggling goaltender Dominik Hasek, who was injured while trying to stop Bret's shot. He was replaced in net and left the game.

Bret closed the night out even, with one shot, one goal, which brings him to one goal and two assists. Both Meeko and I are now breathing a sigh of relief that he is playing, and are praying to the hockey gods that he'll continue to do so, especially through November the 6th=)

October 30, 1999 (in Ottawa)
Panthers
0 Ottawa Senators 5

Hedican back in his second game .. slashed Sami Salo and broke his arm. The rest of the game is better forgotten!

November 3, 1999 (in Edmonton)
Panthers

Edmonton Oilers

No Bret =P He was suspsended 3 games for the slash on Sami Salo. And I forgot to do a game report.. even though I was at the game.. lol

November 5, 1999 (in Vancouver)
Panthers
2
Vancouver Canucks
 3

No Bret ... No Bure... No Weekes but a very good hockey game! If only I could have watched it live.. instead it was once again via Real Audio on the Internet. But hey at least we've got to hear 2 Bret interviews in the last 2 games.. I wonder if they'll talk to him in Calgary =)

This was a much better game than the last Panther-Canucks match-up .. only cuz my team won. While I'm a Hedican fan.. I'm still a die-hard Canucks fan.. so the Panthers can win any game... except when playing the Canucks!

The Panther goals were scored by Kvasha (Kozlov, Svhela) and Whitney (Svhela, Mellanby). Burke has had trouble this season going 1-4.

November 6, 1999 (in Calgary)
Panthers
6 Calgary Flames 3

The Panthers have lost a player in every game on this road trip it appears. But last night they also got one back. A week ago they lost Cam Stewart due to concussion, and Bret Hedican and Chris Wells due to suspension. Then Wednesday Bure went out with a broken pinkie finger, Friday Jakopin was lost due to neck spasms (that's what you get for trying to fight Brash!) and then Saturday they got Lance Pitlick back and finally managed to get a win.  They did this without key players, and without there captain as Mellanby was kicked out for being third man in a fight in the second period.

Overall it was a very enjoyable game to watch, especially since it was high scoring. I was cheering for the Panthers.. my mom who went to the game with me was cheering for whoever.. lol. She started out cheering for the Panthers, then she was cheering for the Flames since she felt bad that they were losing.. but she was also cheering when Whitney scored.. so I had no idea who she wanted to win.. lol.

The Panther goals were all scored by different players! The first 3 came against Grant Fuhr.. the next 3 against Fred Braithwaite who replaced Fuhr 13:35 into the first period. The goals were scored by Wilson (Laus, Pitlick), Dvorak (Whitney, Niedermayer), Spacek (Svhela, Niedermayer), Whitney (unassisted), Parrish (Wilson, Kozlov), and Niedermayer (Kuba).

Kidd and Simpson were the only Panthers who managed to play in games for the first time against their former teams. Pitlick, Bure, and Hedican were all out on return visits to their old teams. Pitlick will get a chance again in February, Hedican and Bure will have to wait til either next season.. or a miracle will happen and it will be a Panthers - Canucks Stanley Cup Final =) I didn't catch any glimpses of Hedican at the game last night.. and my mom was not too keen on hanging out after the game by the bus.. lol. So I will have to wait til next season to see Hedican play .. or at least the playoffs to see him play on TV.

November 13, 1999 (in Florida)
Panthers
3 Buffalo Sabres 1

Finally! I see a Panthers game.. with Hedican.. on TV! =) I caught the last period last night.. then just now I watched the first two. I really like this Satellite thing =) Although its really odd watching a sports broadcast from someone other than CBC or Sportsnet. Also while its an American game.. all the commercials are from CBC.

It was a good game .. lots of back and forth action, although the Panthers started to slack off in the third period, not giving Kidd the coverage he needed to get his shutout. Dvorak had 2 goals, and could have had the hat trick if Roloson had not stopped him on some good shots. Bure added the third goal for the Panthers with one of his classic short-handed tally's.

Hedican looked good out on the ice.. he was called for boarding in the 2nd period.. it was more like  a light tap.. but the guy went down so Heddy got the penalty. He was good at getting the puck up the ice, but didn't have any shots on goal. Actually besides the 2 min in the box it was not a very exciting game for Heddy. He also ended the night even on plus/minus.

The game Reports should be a lot more interesting now that I'll be able to watch the games.. the fun night will be Wednesday when I'll have that remote control in hand watching two games as the Canucks also play that night against Detroit .. another one of my favorite teams. The Panthers will be going against Colorado.. a team that hopefully will be coming off a loss against Vancouver =)

November 17, 1999 (in Colorada)
Panthers
2 Colorado Avalanche 1

The Panthers go four in a row, and help keep the Canucks spot of first place in the Northwest Division alive. They defeated the 'lanche with onl;y 15.7 seconds left in the third period to break what would have been a 1-1 tie.

The first Panther goal was scored by Dvorak (Hedican, Mellanby). Hedican saw Devo behind the defencemen and in front of the net and sent the puck towards the net. Devo managed to get it in.  The 2nd Panthers goals was scored on a wrist shot by Niedermayer (Mellanby, Dvorak) with only 15.7 seconds remaining in regulation time. He was just coming on the ice from a line change and caught a pass from Mellanby to score the goal.

Overall the Panthers were not having a very good night, even though they came out with the win. Trevor Kidd had to be the first star because he was doing everything short of standing on his head to keep the puck out of the net. Hedican had an okay game.. but his partner Pitlick kept giving the puck away which did not make there jobs very easy. Hedican had a good hit on Hejduk, sent him flying across the ice. He also ended up in the penalty box for interference in the third period.

As for how the Panther kept the Canucks alive.. well I was watching both games (switched back and forth.. a lot!) and the Canucks lost 7-2 to Detroit, so they needed Colorado to lose so they could keep their 3 point lead in the Northwest Division. For the Panthers they have a cushy 5 point lead in the Southeast Division, and are only 2 points behind Conference Leaders Ottawa and Toronto with only 18 games played. Ottawa has played 19, Toronto 21.

Bret's stats for the game: 1 Assist, 1 Shot, 2 PIM, +1, 20:56 TOI, 1:04 PPT, 1:26 SHT, 27 SHF, 2 BS, 2 Hits, 2GA

November 18, 1999 (in St. Louis)
Panthers
0 St. Louis Blues 3

The Panthers were aiming for 5 in a row.. but really fell short with St. Louis shutting them out on the road. The game stayed even until the Third Period. Up until that point Burke was doing an excellent job in goal.. even with some bad giveaways by the Panthers.  Burke only gave up the first 2 goals, the third was scored on the empty net.

Hedican was playing with Pitlick and Simpson, as it appears Pitlick was in the dog house since he only played for just over 10 min, while Hedican had a normal night with 19 min on the ice. Hopefully the Panthers can turn things around when they return home for a game against Pittsburgh.

Panthers
2 Pittsburgh Penguins 1

The Panthers pulled out a win after their shutout in St. Louis. The defeated the Jagr-less Penguins 2-1. Florida goals were scored by Kozlov (Whitney, Spacek) and Wilson (Bure, Whitney). Bret had no points on the night. I missed the game.. cuz I was at the Edmonton-Detroit game.. so thats the report. =)

November 27, 1999 (in Florida)
Panthers
3 Atlanta Thrashers 0

The Panthers shutout the Thrashers 3-0. The goals were scored by Stewart (Laus, Spacek), Niedermayer (Mellanby, Spacek), and Bure (Hedican). Kidd finally managed to get the shutout he's been aiming for. Hedican got his second assist in 2 games.

Emerson of the Thrashers left the game in the second period after an awful open ice hit. He was caught not paying attention when Spacek came up and hit him, Emerson was left with a Grade 2 concussion and had to be taken off the ice in a stretcher. They even showed him convulsing on the ice, but by the time they took him off he was conscious and aware of what was happening.

Hedican was also hit pretty bad in the first period, he was checked into the boards and got his arm caught wrong, he looked like he was in quite a bit of pain, but went on to play the rest of the game.. and play very well at that. He had to fill in for Spacek on the top line and seemed to click very well with Svhela, lately he has been playing with Simpson, as Pitlick has been moved down to play with Wilson. Hedican had a hand in the goal of the game, as it was his perfect pass to Bure that got the Panthers their third goal. He also helped to defend the net so Kidd could get his first shutout as a Panther.

The Panthers got their fourth win in a row tonight vs the Pittsburgh Penguins, a team that was on its own 4 game winning streak. Bure once again had a hot night with 2 goals and an assist. The other Panthers goals were from Parrish (Whitney, Niedermayer), Kozlov (Bure), and Spacek (Parrish, Whitney). The assists on the Bure goals went to Kozlov, Spacek, and the last was an empty netter, unassisted.

Hedican got a fair amount of ice time playing with either Svhela or Simpson, Svhela and Hedican seem to be making a good combination when they play together, Hedican ended up even on the night, with 4 min in the box with a double minor for high sticking.

The Panthers came through and wiped out Tampa Bay in a 6-1 route. Bret was injured in the first period when an errant elbow from Reid Simpson hit him in the face and gave him a minor concussion. Bret left the game and did not return. Although he will be back for the Panthers game on Thursday.

Panthers
1 Chicago 2

The Panthers kill Tampa Bay.. then lose to Chicago??? Guess they didn't like the loss of Devo (Radek Dvorak) .. he was traded to San Jose for Mike Vernon, and then Devo was traded to NYR.

Without Bure getting any points, they lost 2-1 to Chicago, the lone goal was scored by a player who has spent alot of time in the Press Box, Ray Sheppard (Niedermayer, Whitney). Hedican ended the game +1.. so that's a bonus, he wasn't on ice for any Chicago goals.

Panthers
7 Tampa Bay 5

Pavel Bure saved the day, and that guy Brad Hedican got a goal too.. Brad who? Whoever writes the game reports put in BRAD Hedican.. not Bret.. Brad!  And it went so far as to propagate throughout all the newspapers, as it even appeared in the Edmonton Sun! Anyway, Hedican, Bret Hedican that is, did get a goal and an assist on New Year's Day in Sunrise.  In essence it was a bad game, because just last week the Panthers defeated Tampa Bay 6-1 with Shumilstra in goal.. a goalie who up to that point had only played in 1 NHL game. So to then go on and win by a score of 7-5 is not good.. especially with their new goalie Mike Vernon in net.. maybe it was that Sharks stuff he was wearing that made the Panthers thing he was not their goalie.. so why protect the net? There has to be an answer somewhere, and after the game Vernon did thank Pavel for saving the game.

Pavel had 4 goals, the others came from Hedican, Svehla, and Ray Sheppard.

3 Atlanta 3

Sorry for the lack of game updates, I was sick for a couple of weeks, and for most of it I had no computer access (stuck in the hospital)

The Panthers played to a 3-3 tie against the Atlanta Thrashers, which effectively brought them down to earth and made them realize they are not invincible. They are also starting to get tired after playing so many games in so little time.. 6 in 10 days.

Heddy had 2 roughing penalties.. what was he up too? I missed the game last night .. looks like it might have been interesting.

January 26, 2000 (in Sunrise)
Panthers
2 New Jersey 3

The Panthers should have had this one... at least they should have had a tie, but they lost it with 1.7 seconds remaining in the Third Period.  The game went by very quickly, ending in less than 2 1/2 hours as only 1 penalty was called, against New Jersey, in the game.

It was a good defensive game, with some good takeaways and poke checks. And the Panthers scored 2 great goals, if only it had been enough. The 2 goals were scored by Kozlov (Svhela) and Parrish (Stewart, Johnson).

Heddy unfortunately was on ice for one of the  New Jersey goals, it was not a good play. Other than that he had a solid game with a couple good shots at the goal, excellent blocked shots and great body checks, keeping the New Jersey players off the puck. The Panthers next go against Philly, tomorrow night.. in Philly.

January 27, 2000 (in Philadelphia)
Panthers
2 Flyers 4

The Panthers lost in a VERY hard hitting game, filled with lots of fights. The Cats came out and got an early lead with a Pavel Bure breakaway (assisted by Svehla), but the Flyers answered that with 3 goals of their own in the first period. The next Panther goal did not come until the 3rd period with less than a minute to go. That goal was scored by Whitney (Hedican).

Heddy was involved in the action throughout, and almost ended up in a fight with Lindros.. that was who he was matched up with when all the players went at it.. although from what I saw Heddy played it safe and didn't really fight .. bright idea I'd say. He also had 1 penalty for cross-checking.. which I missed.     The Panthers next battle the Oilers on Saturday.. I'll be listening to the game on the local radio, as its blacked out here =P That is definitely a game I would have love to be able to watch!

Bret's stats for the game:  1 assist, -1, 19:21 TOI,  4:18 PPT,  1:58 SHT, 28 SHF,  0 Shots,  2 PIM, 1 BS, 2 Hits

Panthers
2 Edmonton Oilers 1

The only game that I can't watch because it is blacked out.. and Hedican scores the game winner and is the Second Star! Oh well I listened to all the action on the radio and it was a good game, with the Oilers totally out playing the Panthers, but the Panthers winning. Can't beat that.

The Oilers opened up the scoring 2:54 into the first, but the Panthers followed that with 2 of their own at 4:21 and 7:21 of the first. The first Panther goal came from Whitney (Spacek, Bure) and the second from Hedican (Parrish, Kvasha). No other goals were scored after that.

The Oilers totally out shot the Panthers in this one 38 - 20, but Vernon, who was the first star, managed to keep all of them out.

Bret's stats for the game:  1 Goal (Game Winning), +1, 19:17 TOI,  27 SHF,  2 Shots,  2 PIM, 1 BS, 3 Hits, 1 TA
