went off Geoff Courtnall and into the net :) (This game has aired on

Other Notables..
|
Bret is an
asset to any team, because of his great speed. He was a finalist in
the Western Skills Competition at the 1996 All-Star Game in Boston,
in the fastest skater competition. He finished 6th overall (13.840
seconds).
His first goal in the 95/96 season was against Tampa Bay on January
3rd. He thanked Alexander Mogilny afterwards...he had borrowed
Hedican's sticks in practice and put more toe on the stick than
Hedican used. Hedican used the stick in practice and scored the next
game. No word on whether he still uses the "Mogilny version" of his
stick! And in case anyone cares, he uses white tape on his stick.
Bret played his first NHL game in Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. He's
also superstitious about his equipment...he won't let anyone touch
it once it's been placed in his stall. |
Season By Season
1996 - 1997
|
- Bret missed 6 games early in the season after suffering from
an oblique muscle pull. He had assists against Calgary (2),
Pittsburgh, Anaheim (2), Edmonton (2 in one game), New York
Islanders, San Jose Sharks and goals against the New York Rangers,
Ottawa Senators, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, and the Phoenix
Coyotes.
- He had a goal called back against Florida that should've
counted.
- He was named 3rd Star on April 9th against the Phoenix
Coyotes.
- He has also suffered from groin injuries, one occurring Dec
4th against Buffalo, the other Dec 27th against San Jose.
- Bret was also a member of the 1997 World Championships with
Team USA. Donald Brashear (who is from Indiana) was also on the
team.

1997-1998
|
- The Canucks finished in last place in the Pacific Division.
But Bret managed to stay in the positive.. for plus/minus that is!
- Bret ended the season in 9th place for total points, which for
him is excellent considering he accumulated 8 more points that he
did last season =)
- He ended up fourth on the team in assists, only behind
Messier, Bure and Mogilny, including 7 shorthanded assists, which
placed him second on the team behind Bure for shorthanded points
this season, but for just assists (7) he was tops in the entire
NHL.
- He ended up 8th on the team in power play points, with 6, 1
goal and 5 assists.
- He played a total of 71 out of the 82 games, missing some
games in the beginning of the season due to his contract dispute
(which was resolved by Oct. 9) and in late February due to an
injury, which was still affecting him at the end of the season so
he decided not to play in the World Championships.
- The most points Bret achieved in one game was three assists,
in the game against Chicago, Nov. 22, 1997. He had a five game
point streak between Nov. 20 and Nov. 29, beginning in Phoenix and
ending in the game against Detroit on Dec. 1. Bret ended the
season only 2 points off tying his highest point total in his NHL
career and his highest +/- of the season was +15.
- Also... I'm beginning to see why Bret's favorite city is
Chicago... he scores his first NHL goal there, and in the 97/98
season he gets 3 assists in one game against them!

Net Hedican/Panther Game Reports of the 1998/99 season to see
how Bret did in each individual game.
- Bret missed the season opener due to an ankle injury in the
preseason while with the Canucks. His next injury did not come
until he was injured by an unpenalized (blind Ref's!) High Stick
on February 11, 1999 from Daniel Alfredsson. His cornea was
scratched, in addition to his nose. He missed close to 3 weeks of
play (placed on Injured Reserve Feb 15, retroactive to Feb 12.,
returned March 3.), and had to wear a visor when he returned, he
missed a total of 8 games. Hedican tore his groin in the 1st
period of a Panther game March 31, 1999, the injury kept him out
for 8 games, he returned to play the final Panther game of the
season where he got a Gordie Howe Hat Trick.. an assist, a goal,
and into a fight with Darcy Tucker. The most points he received in
a game were.. 1 short-handed goal, and 1 assist against Colorado,
Nov. 19, 1998, 1 goal and 1 assist in the final game of the season
vs. Tampa Bay, 2 Assists in games against Nashville, Nov. 7, 1998,
Calgary, December 22, 1998 and NY Islanders January 20, 1 999 (as
a Panther). Highest +/- +11 (Nov. 19)(Bret never dropped below 0
for +/-, and had the highest +/- on the Canucks roster for the
season!.. no Canuck player on the Roster at the end of the season
was in the +). Bret tallied his 100th NHL Career Assist on
November 19, 1998 against Colorado, also scored his first EVER
short-handed goal in the same game. Bret was traded to the Florida
Panthers in the Pavel Bure deal on January 17, 1999. Tallied his
first two assists as a Panther January 20, 1999, then scored the
Game Winning Goal for the Panthers on January 21, 1999.
- Bret played for team USA in the World Hockey Championships. In
6 games he had 1 assist, 8 penalty minutes, 10 shots on goal, and
ended with a +5. View a game by

- View the
Bret Net Hedican/Panther Game Reports of the 1999/2000 season
to see how Bret did in each individual game.
- Bret had some early problems with his groin, he missed 3
Panther practices due to it. He tore his groin last season, and
the problems were caused by the scar tissue as a result. Due to
overcompensation for problems in his right groin, he pulled his
left groin and missed 2 games Oct. 24th and 27th. He then returned
to play October 29th and scored his first goal of the season on a
huge shot from the Blueline that resulted in Hasek getting a 90%
tear in his groin, (Hasek did not return to play til February). In
the game following that against Ottawa Bret slashed Sami Salo
while trying to stop him from scoring a goal, the problem is he
missed Salo's stick and hit is wrist and broke it (Salo did not
return to play until Feb. 19). This resulted in a 3 game
suspension, the 3 games Bret missed were in Edmonton, Vancouver
and Calgary (aka the games that Ariesrising and Meeko would have
been able to see him play in!). You can here Bret talk about the
slash in his own words here.
- Hedican scored a Game Winning Goal vs the Edmonton Oilers on
Jan. 29, 2000. He was also the Second Star of the game.
- Bret missed the last 2 periods of the game on Dec. 27th, 1999,
due to a minor concussion caused by the elbow of Reid Simpson. He
is okay and returned to action Dec. 30th. Bret also missed a game
in February with a minor shoulder injury.

Logged a team-high 31:01 of ice time vs. Philly on Nov. 10. Scored
his first goal of the season, Nov. 12 vs Buffalo. Finished a
plus-4 with two assists in 6-0 win over Anaheim on Nov. 21.

jaw that he sustained in the last pre-season game vs Tampa Bay. He
received the injury, shortly after returning to the ice after
being stitched up after getting cut by a skate on the chin.
- Note to Svhela - you don't run over your own teammates - which
is what Svhela did in the game against Boston, December 28, 2001.
Bret was OK though and played the rest of the game.
- Bret had his best game of the season thus far, December 29,
2001!! Two Goals, Two Assists, and he was First Star!! It all
played out on Hockey Night in Canada for all to see :) And for
those watching - we really enjoyed it! (The Panthers won 4-2 vs
Toronto) It is the most points Bret has got in a single game, and
the most points a Panthers defenseman has got in a single game.
- Bret was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes January 16, 2002.
- Bret scored his first goal as a Hurricane, January 19, 2002
against New Jersey. First assist January 21, 2002 against
Vancouver.

back (he went out after the 2nd period in the game vs Florida
January 25, 2002).
- Bret was 2nd star in the game April 12, 2002 vs the Panthers.
He scored the Game Winning Goal.
